Cape Town Excursions with Kids: Half-Day Instead of Full-Day

Cape Town’s most popular excursions are long. Among the twenty tours with the most reviews on GetYourGuide, five go to the Cape of Good Hope, and according to the operators, all of them last eight to ten hours. For adults, that’s a full, enjoyable day. For a pre-school child, it’s mainly many hours in the seat of a minibus.
The same route is also available as a half-day tour, for less money. This article works out what that leaves out, where the stated times are too optimistic, and which excursions in the Western Cape can’t be shortened with kids at all. Ten hours, and how much of that is penguins
Take the most-reviewed full-day tour: the Cape of Good Hope and Penguins day tour with pickup, from €45.63, 4.7 stars from 4,591 reviews. Pickup is between 7 and 8 a.m. The itinerary allows about an hour each at the Cape of Good Hope, the Cape Point lighthouse and the penguins at Boulders Beach, plus an hour in Hout Bay, a 75-minute lunch break in Simon’s Town and half an hour in Muizenberg. The rest is driving, broken up by photo stops, including two on Chapman’s Peak Drive.
That’s well planned, but it means the penguins – for most children the actual reason for the trip – make up around a tenth of the day. Anyone travelling with a child who asks after an hour in the car whether they’re there yet should know this sum in advance. The half-day tours: what’s left out
Two half-day tours visit the same three main destinations, but with different priorities:

Half-day A is the Cape Point and Boulders Beach half-day tour from Kenzi Travel and Tours, from €35.85, 4.8 stars from 893 reviews. It keeps the coastal road over Chapman’s Peak and shortens the stops everywhere else instead. Pickup is from your accommodation; the booking page lists 15 neighbourhoods from Camps Bay to Observatory. The review summary praises the tight schedule, but also mentions guests who felt they lacked time at the main stops. For children, the weak point is clear. 25 minutes at the penguins means one walk along the boardwalk and back.
Half-day B is the Penguins and Cape of Good Hope half-day tour from Mathew transport and tours, from €30.65, 4.3 stars from 360 reviews. It runs along False Bay, leaves out Chapman’s Peak, and gives the penguins a full hour. Guiding is in English and French. Pickup is only from five points: the Westin, the city centre, Sea Point, Green Point and one hotel at the Waterfront. Anyone staying in Camps Bay or Gardens has to get there first.
For families with small children, B is therefore the better choice if the penguins are the goal. A suits families with older children who want the views and don’t mind a tight pace.
Four hours are rarely four hours
The stated durations for the half-day tours are tight. For Half-day B, the planned stops add up to just under three hours. That would leave a good one hour for the drive from the city to the southern tip of the peninsula and back. For Half-day A, the heading says “5 hours”, while the description text on the same page says “6-hour tour”.
The Penguins and Cape of Good Hope at sunset starts at €32.35 per person and is listed as four hours. Its final sunset stop is optional in the itinerary. Confirm Signal Hill and your return time before planning the rest of the family’s day.
So plan five to six hours for any half-day tour, and don’t schedule anything fixed for the afternoon. Afternoon sunset tours are the worst option with small children: the return drive falls exactly in the window when children get tired and hungry, and there’s no lunch break.
The entrance fees are the same
Shorter doesn’t mean cheaper at the gate. The Cape of Good Hope and Boulders are part of Table Mountain National Park, and its tariff applies regardless of the tour. For foreign visitors, the Cape costs R592 per adult and R288 per child aged 2 to 11, Boulders R282 and R138. That’s the standard rate from 1 November 2026 to 31 October 2027. A family with two adults and two children in this age group therefore pays R2600 in entrance fees – on the half-day tour just as on the full-day tour.
On Half-day B’s booking page, older, lower amounts are still listed. In the reviews, guests ask for clearer information on entrance fees and payment methods. Ask before booking what’s payable on-site and whether you can pay by card.
What fits well into half a day with a toddler
Not every good morning needs a tour to the Cape. Three things that fit easily into a few hours with small children:
- The Table Mountain Aerial Cableway. Children under 4 ride free according to the operator; from 4 to 17, the return trip costs R230 online. You don’t need a tour for this, just the first clear, windless morning. Combined offers can be found under Table Mountain Tours.
- The marine wildlife tour from the V&A Waterfront. 1 hour 30 minutes in Table Bay, from €61.65, suitable for everyone from age 2, according to the operator. Which animals show up can’t be planned.

What can’t be shortened
Some excursions are only available as a full day, because the journey alone takes half a day.
Aquila’s tour with options starts at €220.07 per person and now lists 7–11 hours including transfers. Its illustrated afternoon itinerary totals eight hours: five hours in the minibus, one for lunch and two for the game drive. Whales at Hermanus. The boat trip itself takes 2 hours. But the day tours from Cape Town are listed at seven to ten hours. In season, you can often see the whales at Hermanus from the cliff path too, without a boat and without a life jacket for the toddler. Shark cage diving at Gansbaai. Around two and a half hours of driving each way, according to the operators, plus the time on site and on the boat. The age rules are set out in the article Cape Town tours with kids: what minimum age applies where.
When even half a day is too much
With a baby and no confirmed car seat. On the full-day tour from €45.63, baby seats are available on request, according to the operator. The booking pages for the half-day tours say nothing about this. Ask before booking, and don’t book until you have the answer in writing.
If your child gets carsick easily. Chapman’s Peak is a winding coastal road, and on every version of the tour you spend several hours in the vehicle. What helps is something to discuss with your paediatrician or pharmacist. Half-day B leaves out Chapman’s Peak.
In strong wind. The south-easterly wind that Capetonians call the Cape Doctor often blows hard in summer. At the Cape Point lighthouse, you’ll then be standing on an exposed rock, and with a small child there’s little joy left in that. If you’re flexible, schedule the trip to the Cape for a calm day.
