Cape Town Hop-On Hop-Off Bus: Routes, Timing, Cableway Combo

The red double-decker buses from City Sightseeing are listed on GetYourGuide as the Cape Town: Hop-On Bus & Wine Tasting at Groot Constantia from €34.57, rated 4.5 stars from 104 reviews. It combines an unlimited one-day hop-on hop-off ticket with a wine tasting at the historic Groot Constantia estate. What the booking page doesn’t work out for you: how much of your day the routes actually take, when the last bus runs, and from what point the combo ticket with the Table Mountain cableway (from €55.98) pays off.
Three routes and what they cost you in time
The ticket is valid on all three routes, according to the operator. All buses are red; the route is shown on the digital display at the front and by the entrance. One full loop without getting off takes:
- Red Route (City Tour, goes to the cableway’s lower station): about 90 minutes.
- Blue Route (called “Mini Peninsula” by the operator): around 140 minutes according to the operator’s FAQ. The operator lists, among other stops, Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden.
- Purple Route: a short wine loop through the Constantia Valley, around 30 minutes.
Red and Blue back to back already add up to three and a half to almost four hours of pure travel time. According to the operator, the buses run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., earlier and later in summer, at intervals of 15 or 30 minutes depending on the season. So every stop-off can cost you up to half an hour waiting for the next bus. When it actually arrives is shown by the operator’s live tracker or the QR code at the stop.
Realistically, you can manage one full route with two or three stops in a day – or the Red Route plus the cableway.
On validity: the operator itself sells Classic (1 day), Premium (2 consecutive days, with a sunset bus and one boat trip) and Deluxe (3 days). Important: the operator counts by calendar days, not by 24-hour periods. Someone boarding at 3 p.m. with a day ticket outside of summer still has around two hours of bus operation left.
What happens on board
Two restrictions are easy to miss: the cableway isn’t included, and on certain major event days, such as the Cape Town Cycle Tour, the bus doesn’t run, according to the operator.
The cableway: queues, weather, last bus
The Red Route takes you to the lower station. You buy the cableway ticket there or add it in advance yourself. According to the cableway operator, a return trip costs adults 475 rand online, 530 rand at the counter, and children aged 4 to 17 pay 230 rand online (rates from 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027).
You won’t escape the queue. The cableway operator itself states that even with an online ticket, you’ll have to queue on busy days. The only way round it is Fast Track for 1,200 rand (return), which isn’t included in either tour. Buyers of the combo ticket also report having to wait in good weather.
The cableway only runs if the weather plays along, and can be closed in bad weather. Current status is shown on the cableway operator’s website and app. Check before heading to the lower station. One bus passenger reports that the cableway was closed on their travel day; they went along the coast instead.
The last bus leaves earlier than the last cable car. From 1 September to 31 October, the last cable car goes up at 6 p.m. and the last one down at 7 p.m. According to the operator, the buses run until 5 p.m., only later in summer. So if you wait for the evening at the top, you’ll need another way down. The last departure from the lower station is in the operator’s timetable.
The combo ticket with the cableway: the maths
The Table Mountain Cableway with Hop-On/Hop-Off Bus Tour costs from €56.02 and has 4.6 stars from 3,574 reviews. The provider here is City Pass Cape Town, not City Sightseeing itself. Included are a Classic bus ticket for one day on all three routes, a cableway return trip, plus a walking tour through the city and Bo-Kaap starting at 81 Long Street.
The maths with both starting prices: €55.98 minus €29.28 leaves €26.70 for the cableway. Bought directly online, it costs 475 rand. Calculate at your card’s exchange rate on the day of booking: if 475 rand is more than €26.70, the combo is cheaper. If it’s less, separate tickets work out cheaper. At the counter (530 rand), the maths shifts in favour of the combo. Compare the specific options for your date beforehand.
At least as important are the conditions:
- Combo: the cableway part is valid for 14 days from first use, the bus for one day only. If the cableway is cancelled due to weather, you can go on another day. Once you’ve used the bus or the cableway, there’s no refund.
- Separate: the cableway’s online ticket is valid for 7 days. If you miss the ride because of the weather, the operator says you can use it on the next open day of the same week or apply for an online refund.
So the combo is worth it if you’re set on going up, 475 rand converted comes to more than €26.70, and you can do without a refund. If you prefer to decide on the day depending on the weather, take the bus ticket and buy the cableway separately. You’ll find alternatives among the Table Mountain tours.
When the bus is the wrong choice
If you want to go to Cape Point. The Cape of Good Hope and the penguins at Boulders Beach don’t appear in the route descriptions; the operator sells a separate day tour for that. If that’s where you want to go, you don’t need a bus but a day tour to the Cape with penguins. You’ll find the options among the Cape of Good Hope tours.
If you mean the Winelands. The Purple Route stays within the Constantia Valley. For Stellenbosch, Franschhoek or Paarl, you need one of the wine tours to the Winelands.
If you want to be out early or late. With operating hours of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. outside of summer, early mornings and evenings are off the table.
