Do You Need a Car in Cape Town? An Honest Answer
6 min read
For a lot of Cape Town holidays the answer is no, and the people who most often assume otherwise are the ones who would benefit least. A first-time visitor staying at the V&A Waterfront for five nights, doing the mountain, the peninsula and one wine day, can do all of it without ever holding a key. A family renting a house in Noordhoek for three weeks cannot sensibly do anything else.
This article sets out what the alternatives actually cost, where they stop, and at what point a hire car becomes the cheaper and saner option. All prices are the operators’ published ones, and rand amounts change when the operators change them.
What the alternatives cost
The MyCiTi bus network is the backbone. A myconnect card costs R40 from station kiosks and retailers, and children under 4 travel free. Beyond pay-as-you-go, the City publishes unlimited packages in its fare schedule from 1 July 2026: One Day Pass R130, Three Day Pass R290, Seven Day Pass R420, Monthly Pass R1500. Travelling without a valid fare carries a R700 penalty, so buy the card before you board rather than after.
| Getting around | Published cost | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| MyCiTi Seven Day Pass | R420 plus R40 card | City Bowl, Atlantic seaboard, airport route, Table View |
| Hop-on hop-off bus | from €29.28 | Fixed sightseeing circuits, finishes late afternoon |
| Metrorail Southern Line | operator’s fare | Cape Town station towards Muizenberg and Simon’s Town |
| Ride-hailing and metered taxis | metered | Door to door, no parking problem |
| Hire car | varies by season | Everything, including the places none of the above reach |
The hop-on hop-off bus from €34.57 is a sightseeing product, not transport: it runs fixed circuits and stops running in the late afternoon. Our route and timing comparison has the running times, which matter more than the ticket price.
Where the buses stop
This is the part that decides the question, and it is geographic rather than financial. MyCiTi covers the City Bowl, the Atlantic seaboard as far as Hout Bay, the airport corridor and the northern suburbs. It does not run down the eastern side of the peninsula to Simon’s Town and Boulders, and it does not go to Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, Hermanus or Gansbaai.
For the False Bay side there is the train. Metrorail’s Southern Line runs from Cape Town station through the southern suburbs to Muizenberg, Fish Hoek and Simon’s Town, and Boulders is a walk or a short taxi ride from Simon’s Town station. Service patterns on that line have changed repeatedly in recent years, including differences between weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays, so check the current timetable with Metrorail Western Cape rather than with a guidebook — including this one.
For everything else outside the city, the two realistic options are a guided tour with pickup or a car. Cape Town’s selection carries 505 offers, 100 of them on the Cape Peninsula from €24.88, and most of the day tours include hotel pickup. If you are doing three or four excursions in a week, four transfers included in four tour prices will usually beat a week’s hire plus fuel plus parking.
When a car is the right call
Four situations where I would book one without much hesitation:
You are staying outside the served corridors. Noordhoek, Kommetjie, Scarborough, Simon’s Town, Kalk Bay, the Constantia valley, anywhere in the Winelands. Without a car, every dinner becomes a taxi negotiation.
You are staying more than about ten days. The maths flips somewhere in the second week, because the tour price is per person per day while the car is per car per day. Two adults doing six excursions pay twelve tour fares.
You are travelling with small children. A car seat you control, a boot for the beach kit, and the freedom to leave when the toddler has had enough are worth more than they look on a spreadsheet. Note that any child seat is an extra on a hire booking, and one you should reserve rather than hope for.
You want to be on the peninsula at first light or after sunset. No bus or tour will put you at Cape Point at 6 a.m. or on Chapman’s Peak at dusk. The route worth driving is a separate article, because it is a genuinely different day.
When a car is the wrong call
A cruise call or a single free day. You lose an hour at the desk on each side of a day you are already short on. Our shore excursion guide explains why the return time, not the price, decides what fits.
A wine day. South Africa’s drink-driving limits are strict, and the point of a tasting tour is tasting. Our three-region wine tour comparison covers the guided alternatives, all of which include the driving.
Nobody in the party is comfortable on the left. South Africa drives on the left, and the Cape Peninsula’s roads are narrow, winding and busy with cyclists. If left-hand traffic is new to you, the first drive should not be Chapman’s Peak in the rain.
You have no credit card in the main driver’s name. That is not a preference, it is a requirement at most desks — see excess, deposit and what gets added at the counter before you assume your debit card will do.
If the answer is yes
Two documents settle before you fly. Your national licence is accepted in South Africa if it is in English and carries your photograph and signature; if it is in another language, you need an official translation or an International Driving Permit, which you can only get at home. Carry your passport when you drive.
On cost: Discover Cars’ own South African figures put average daily hire in Cape Town at its cheapest in November and its highest in August, and petrol at just under R20 a litre in February 2026. Both move, so treat them as an order of magnitude and not a quote. Compare offers, dates and suppliers on Discover Cars before you decide — including for a few days out of a longer trip, which is often the answer nobody considers: bus and tours in the city, a car for the three days you actually leave it.
If you are still weighing up what the week should contain at all, the Cape Town sights guide sets out the individual places and their entry fees, and things to do in Cape Town lists the full selection by price.
