Shark Cage Diving from Cape Town: Which Trip to Book, Gansbaai or False Bay?

6 min read

A cage floating beside a boat on open water, with divers in wetsuits waiting on deck

For most people the answer is the shark cage dive with White Shark Projects in Gansbaai from €118.09: 4.7 stars from 899 reviews, and the lowest price of the five trips we compare here. If you would rather not spend five hours of your day in a minibus, the Simon’s Town dive in False Bay from €190.55 starts inside Cape Town itself. Either way, read the paragraph on what you will actually see before you book.

Cape Town has two shark-diving areas. Gansbaai lies about two and a half hours’ drive east along the coast and is the well-known one; False Bay is on the Cape’s own doorstep. Prices are starting prices per person on GetYourGuide.

What You Will Actually See

Do not book this expecting great whites. The White Shark Projects page names bronze whaler and sevengill cow sharks, and its own text speaks openly of the declining presence of great whites in the area. Marine Dynamics lists bronze whalers as the main attraction and mentions sevengill sharks and African stingrays as possible extras. The two False Bay trips also promise bronze whalers.

Sharks are wild animals, and one of the False Bay operators says so explicitly: sightings and behaviour cannot be guaranteed. The Hermanus cruise offers a complimentary repeat dive if no sharks are seen, according to its page. That is a rare piece of fine print and worth checking against the other trips before you book.

The Gansbaai Trips: A Full Day for About 20 Minutes in the Cage

The White Shark Projects trip is the one most people book. The day starts with breakfast and a safety briefing from a marine biologist. About three hours are spent on the water, with around 20 minutes in the cage and the chance of a second dive. Afterwards come hot showers and a light lunch. Wetsuit, mask, boots and hood are included, and no diving certificate is needed. Photos and video are an optional extra at R350.

The listed 4.5 to 8 hours depends on where you start. Pickup from Cape Town adds roughly two hours each way; if you meet the crew at Gansbaai itself, the day is much shorter. The exact start time is only confirmed at 4 pm the day before, so do not plan anything tight around it.

The Marine Dynamics cruise goes to the same coast, at €202.26. It is €85.32 more, and the booking pages do not explain the gap on their own. What the page does list is a soup-and-bread lunch, free entry to the operator’s African penguin and seabird sanctuary, and a spot on the top deck for anyone who prefers to watch rather than dive. It also states no age restrictions. If the sanctuary visit or watching from the deck appeals, the premium is understandable; if not, the cheaper trip does the same job. Both are weather dependent: if the operator cancels, you get a refund or a new date.

The False Bay Trips: Close to Town, Fewer Reviews

The Simon’s Town dive starts at 62 St George’s Street in Simon’s Town and takes four hours. It costs €188.70, and food, drinks and a photo or video are included. Anyone who would rather not go into the cage can watch from the boat. The page excludes children under 5, people with vertigo and people with respiratory problems. A perfect 5.0 from only 40 reviews is a promising start rather than proof, so weigh it accordingly.

The half-day dive in False Bay is €236.18 for three hours, with 4.8 stars from 54 reviews. Two points from the booking page matter: time slots are not confirmed times, so keep the whole day free, and at least five guests are needed for the trip to run. It is the most expensive trip here, and for that money it is the least flexible.

The Hermanus Cruise

The cruise with cage dive and lunch starts in Hermanus, so it only makes sense if you are staying there or driving along the coast anyway. At €144.93 it has the lowest rating of the five, 4.1 stars from 190 reviews. The page says the cage takes four or five people at a time on a rotating basis, so the waiting time is part of the trip. Its repeat-dive guarantee is the best reason to choose it.

What the Day Costs and Where It Goes Wrong

Two places on the White Shark Projects dive come to €233.88, before the optional R350 photo and video package. Getting to Gansbaai yourself saves nothing on the ticket and costs a day at the wheel, so most visitors take the transfer. Our article on a rental car in Cape Town says when driving yourself is worth it.

Seasickness. The White Shark Projects page strongly recommends anti-seasickness tablets, and a reviewer who never usually gets seasick says to bring them anyway. Which remedy is right for you is a question for a pharmacy or doctor before the trip, not for the boat.

Children. The White Shark Projects page lists two different limits: under 6 in its child policy for the boat, under 5 in the “not suitable” list. Treat 6 as the safe reading and ask the operator. The limits for all the trips are collected in Cape Town tours with kids: which age limit applies where.

Cold, weather and tight days. Dives depend on sea conditions and are rescheduled. Book the first days of your trip, not the last. All the shark offers are listed under shark cage diving.

Our Recommendation

For most people: the White Shark Projects dive in Gansbaai from €118.09. Cheapest of the five, 4.7 stars from 899 reviews, and the page is honest about what you will and will not see.

If you only want to lose half a day: the Simon’s Town dive from €190.55. Four hours, no two-hour drive, but a thin pool of reviews and €71.76 more.

Not the right call for everyone. If you want a guaranteed encounter with great whites, no trip here offers one. If you get seasick easily, a rolling boat in open water is the wrong place to find out. And if €117 or more feels steep for 20 minutes in the water, the money is better spent on a boat trip with seals and dolphins.
