What the cable car actually costs
The Table Mountain Aerial Cableway publishes one tariff for 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027:

Children under four travel free. Tickets bought online, at the office or by WhatsApp are valid for seven days, which is the single most useful fact on the page: you can buy now and go on the first day the mountain is clear.
The one-way fare is the option most visitors overlook. At R300 it lets you ride up and walk down, or walk up and ride down, and the second of those is the arrangement most first-time hikers end up wanting.
What the guided hikes cost, and which one you would be booking
Three guided walks dominate the mountain, and they are not the same product:
- The Lion’s Head or Table Mountain Guided Hike at €48.31, 2.5 to 3.5 hours, 5.0 stars from 2,374 reviews. You choose Lion’s Head for sunrise or sunset, or Table Mountain by the direct Platteklip route or the more demanding India Venster.
- The Table Mountain Guided Summit Hike at €67.10, three hours, 4.9 stars from 819 reviews. Its description promises the cable car ride down, weather permitting, which is the correct wording and worth taking literally.
- The Lion’s Head Sunrise/Sunset Hike or Table Mountain Hike at €48.31, three to three and a half hours, 5.0 stars from 872 reviews.

Walking up Table Mountain National Park on the established paths is free. What you pay the operator for is the guide, the pacing and someone who knows which route suits the weather that morning.
Platteklip Gorge is a staircase, not a stroll
This is where honest description matters more than price. Platteklip is the direct line up the front of the mountain: a relentless series of rock steps in a gully with very little shade, gaining roughly a thousand metres. Fit walkers do it in two hours. People who describe themselves as reasonably fit and have never climbed stairs for two hours without a break often do not enjoy it.
India Venster is a different proposition again – exposed sections, scrambling, chains in places. Operators offer it as the adventurous option and they mean it. If anyone in your group is unsure about heights, book Platteklip or Lion’s Head instead and say so when you book.
Going down on foot is its own decision. The descent is harder on knees than the climb is on lungs, and it is where tired people turn ankles. If you only want to do one direction under your own power, do the up.

The combination most people should compare
Before buying a plain cableway ticket, look at the cable car with hop-on hop-off bus at €56.02, 4.6 stars from 3,574 reviews. It includes the cable car return ticket, a day on all three bus routes, and the guided walking tours of the historic centre and Bo-Kaap that leave from Stop 5 at 81 Long Street.
Put that against the Table Mountain Cable Car Ticket at €53.46, 4.1 stars from 461 reviews, and the combination is a few euros more for a full day of transport on top. Its cable car ticket is valid for 14 days from the first use of the bus ticket, and if the cableway is suspended for weather the listing states the ticket stays valid on another day inside that window. That is a better weather arrangement than most single tickets carry.
The lower star rating on the plain ticket is worth a moment’s thought rather than dismissal. Ratings on entry tickets tend to reflect the queue rather than the ride, and on a clear summer morning the queue is long even with an online ticket. The weather decides, and it decides late
The cableway stops in strong wind, sometimes for days at a stretch, and it closed for annual maintenance from 27 July to 9 August 2026. The first car up is at 8:30 a.m., the last up at 6 p.m. and the last down at 7 p.m.
A hike is less easily stopped than the cableway, but it is not weather-proof either, and a guided group will turn back. What both share is that the mountain is a first-calm-day activity, not a last-afternoon one. Plan it early in your stay and keep the ticket’s seven-day validity in reserve.
Our Recommendation
For most people: the cable car with hop-on hop-off bus at €56.02. Against €53.46 for the cable car ticket alone, the extra few euros buy a day of transport, two guided walks and a 14-day window if the wind shuts the mountain. That window is the real argument, not the sightseeing.
For walkers: the guided hike at €48.31, and if you would rather not come back down on foot, the summit hike with the cable car descent at €67.10. Hiking up and buying a R300 one-way ticket at the top is the cheapest version of the same idea.
For families with small children, anyone short of time, and anyone who would not enjoy two hours of steps: the cable car, in whichever form. The summit is the same summit.
Not for walkers with a fear of heights: India Venster has exposed sections and chains, so say Platteklip or Lion’s Head when you book. And nobody should buy a hike for their last afternoon in Cape Town — a guided group turns back in bad weather, and your money goes with it.
