Winelands Wine Tour from Cape Town: Half Day or Full Day?

6 min read

Rows of vines in autumn colours below a mountain ridge

For most visitors: the full-day 3-region wine tour with 15 wines from €58.70, 4.7 stars from 2,709 reviews. It costs only €1.23 more than the Stellenbosch half-day tour at €47 (4.6 stars, 934 reviews) and gives you three regions instead of one. The half day wins if you want hotel pickup, a group capped at 15 and an afternoon free. Those two prices are the real news: the longer day is not the expensive one.

The Winelands begin less than an hour’s drive from the city, so the question is rarely whether to go but how much of the day to hand over. Prices are starting prices per person on GetYourGuide. The tastings are included in both of the main tours, which is not true of every wine day out, as the Franschhoek Wine Tram article shows.

The Half Day: One Town, Two Estates

The Stellenbosch half-day tour runs five hours with pickup included and a group limited to 15 people. You get two vineyards and a walk through Stellenbosch town. At the first estate you taste in barrel-shaped pods with a cheese pairing, with a vegan option. At the second, five wines come with biltong or, for vegetarians, chocolates. Biltong is cured dried meat, the national snack.

There is a morning departure, with pickup between 8:00 and 8:30 am and a return around 1:00 to 1:30 pm, and an afternoon departure, with pickup between 1:00 and 1:30 pm and a return around 6:00 to 6:30 pm. The morning tour visits the town first, the afternoon tour the vineyards first. Most Stellenbosch shops open at 9:00 am and many close between 5:00 and 6:00 pm, so the morning departure suits the town better.

The page states what is not included: tips, lunch (it can be arranged at the vineyard on the afternoon tour) and wine you buy. Guiding is in English only. If you are unsure whether your address is covered, the page suggests asking the operator on WhatsApp before booking. Children may join, and the page offers a kids’ tasting of cheese, a sweet treat and juice. Under-18s may not drink alcohol.

The Full Day: Three Regions, Less Personal

The 3-region tour covers Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl with three estates and 15 wines, cheese and snacks, a cellar tour and a stop at Drakenstein Prison, the place from which Nelson Mandela walked free. Lunch in Franschhoek is optional at an extra charge. Pickup is not at your hotel but at seven fixed points in the city, which is the main reason to read the confirmation email carefully: several reviews complain about confusion over pickup times. All the details, hour by hour, are in our article on the 3-region wine tour.

The honest summary of the value: it is among the cheapest ways to see Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl in a single day, and it feels like a bus tour with tastings. If that sounds like a day, book it.

The Two Dearer Full Days

The full-day tour with wine tram at €77.08 costs €28.85 more than the 3-region tour. For that, the page lists pickup from 21 locations across the city, a private-group option, and a route through Stellenbosch, the Lanzerac and Tokara estates (a chocolate pairing at Lanzerac) and a ride on the Franschhoek wine tram. Guiding is in English or French.

The Winelands full-day tour at €105.07 is the one to consider if you want guiding in German, French or Portuguese, or a private or small group. It visits three estates with four to five tastings at each, plus a short tram ride in Franschhoek; one reviewer calls the ride very short, about five minutes. Lunch is an optional extra. The price gap to the 3-region tour is €56.84, and for English speakers who just want the standard day, it is hard to justify.

What the Day Costs

Two people on the half-day tour pay €94.00, two on the 3-region tour €96.46, before tips, lunch and any wine you buy. Add a sit-down lunch and the full day is still the better price per hour. If you would rather skip the guide altogether and hop between estates yourself, the Franschhoek Wine Tram from €43.92 is the alternative, but tastings are paid on top. More offers are listed under Winelands wine tours.

When It Is Not a Good Idea

Driving afterwards. Tastings add up. On any of these tours the driver does the driving, but if you plan a self-drive day instead, one person has to stay dry. Our guide to renting a car in Cape Town covers that question.

Wine as a side dish. If tasting is secondary and the scenery matters more, the full day spends hours on a bus. The itinerary of the 3-region day lists around four hours of coach time out of 8.5.

Non-English speakers on the cheap tours. Both the half-day and the 3-region tour are guided in English. Anyone who needs another language should look at the dearer tours above.

Our Recommendation

For most visitors: the 3-region wine tour with 15 wines from €58.70. Same price as the half day, three regions, the most reviews of the four.

If you want less bus and more glass: the Stellenbosch half-day tour from €47. Hotel pickup, a group of at most 15, and the afternoon or morning is yours.

Not for everyone. If you do not drink, a wine tour is mostly a bus ride with views. If you want a tram and a hotel pickup, the wine tram day tour at €77.83 is the better fit, and it costs €28.85 more.
