Cape Point and Penguins: One Combined Tour or Two Separate Trips?

7 min read

Dozens of African penguins standing on the sand between granite boulders, with the sea breaking behind them

Book them together, and book the full day: the 10-hour Cape Point and Boulders Beach tour from €39.43 gives you an hour at the colony and holds 4.8 stars from 3,632 reviews. Split the two only if the penguins are the whole point – then the half-day tour to Boulders Beach from €33.16 buys you two hours there instead of 25 minutes. What you must not do is take the half-day combo and expect time with the birds.

Almost every Cape Town visitor books these two places together, and for most people that is right. But the combined half-day tour has a quirk worth knowing before you pay: the entry fees do not shrink when the tour does. You pay the same R282 at the penguin colony whether you spend 25 minutes there or two hours. The entry fees below are the ones SANParks publishes for the tariff year ending 31 October 2027.

The fees are the same in every version

Cape Point and Boulders are two gates of the same national park, and neither is included in a typical tour price:

GateInternational adultInternational child (2–11)
Cape of Good Hope / Cape PointR592R288
Boulders penguin colonyR282R138

Adult rates apply from 12 years. Both gates are cash-free and take cards only. A family of two adults and two children visiting both gates therefore spends R2600 in conservation fees on top of whatever the tour cost — and exactly the same R2600 if they drive themselves.

This matters because the fee is charged per gate, not per hour. Once you have accepted it, the question stops being “what does this cost” and becomes “how much time am I buying with it”.

The three ways to do it

One full day covering both. The Cape Point and Boulders full-day tour from €39.43 lists 10 hours and an hour at the colony, as does the Cape of Good Hope and penguins tour with pickup from €45.63, the most-reviewed of the peninsula days with 4,591 reviews. Cheaper eight-hour versions of the same loop are collected on the Cape Point tours page.

One half day covering both. The half-day Cape Point and Boulders tour from €35.85 is listed at 5 hours, with hotel pickup included and both entry fees excluded — the listing names them at R282 and R592 for adults, exactly the park’s figures. Read the itinerary before you book: it allows a 10-minute photo stop on Chapman’s Peak, 25 minutes at Boulders, 20 minutes at the Cape of Good Hope and 45 minutes at the lighthouse. Its own description, incidentally, calls it a 6-hour tour while the listing says 5; ask which applies to your date.

Two separate half days. The Boulders penguin half-day tour from €33.16 also lists 5 hours with hotel pickup, also excludes the R282, and gives around two hours at the colony and Seaforth. Cape Point then becomes its own trip, with a half-day Cape of Good Hope tour from €30.65 at 4 hours or one of the longer days above.

What the comparison actually says

Put the two half-day versions side by side and the choice becomes clear:

Combined half dayPenguins-only half day
From€35.85€33.16
Listed duration5 hours5 hours
Time at the penguinsabout 25 minutesabout 2 hours
Boulders entryR282 extraR282 extra
Cape Point entryR592 extranot applicable

For the same money and the same five hours, one version puts you at the colony for 25 minutes and the other for two. If the penguins are the reason you came, the combined half day is the expensive way to see them briefly. If Cape Point is the reason you came, it is a reasonable way to see both.

The full days are a different proposition again, and the honest argument for them is not efficiency: it is Chapman’s Peak, Hout Bay, the Cape of Good Hope walk and lunch somewhere on False Bay, which the half days skip or reduce to photo stops. Our full-day versus half-day comparison sets the stops out one by one.

Who should split them up

Anyone travelling with small children. Two five-hour days are easier than one ten-hour day, and the penguin half is the one that holds their attention. Our half-day trips with kids article covers what can and cannot be shortened.

Anyone who wants to swim at Boulders. The beach swim among the penguins needs time, towels and a change of clothes, and it does not fit into a 25-minute stop.

Photographers. Light at the colony changes completely between morning and late afternoon, and a fixed 25-minute slot is whatever light you get.

Anyone whose Cape Point day might be windy. Splitting the two means bad weather costs you half a plan instead of all of it.

Who should not

If you have three days in Cape Town, splitting is a luxury. Two half days cost two pickups, two mornings and two waits; one full day gets both gates done and leaves the rest of the trip intact. And if you are on a ship with a boarding deadline, do not split — see shore excursions and return times.

One more point that is easy to miss: reviewers of the shared half-day tours mention mixed groups causing waits and later returns than advertised. A listed duration is a plan, not a guarantee, and on a shared minibus it depends on fifteen other people’s pickups.

Doing it without a tour

Both gates are straightforward to reach by car, and a self-drive lets you decide how long you stand at each. That is the whole case for it: the fees are identical, so the only thing you buy with the car is time. The route, the toll, the gate times and the baboon rules are in our Cape Peninsula self-drive guide; hire offers and conditions can be compared on Discover Cars.

Our Recommendation

For most people: one full day, and the 10-hour version. From €39.43, 4.8 stars from 3,632 reviews, and its own description promises a full hour at the colony rather than a photo stop. Both gate fees come on top, R874 per adult, whichever tour you pick.

If the penguins are the whole reason you came: the Boulders half day. Five hours, from €33.16, around two hours at the colony and Seaforth, and no R592 gate fee for Cape Point. Then add Cape Point later, or skip it.

Not for you: the half-day combo, if you came for the birds. Twenty-five minutes at the colony for the same R282 and almost the same price as two hours is the one booking in this comparison that regularly disappoints.

If you would rather compare the tours themselves, all 100 peninsula offers from €25.12 are listed under Cape Point tours, and the day that adds the mountain to both gates is covered in Table Mountain, Cape Point and penguins in one day.
